WE NEED YOUR HELP! DONATE TO SUPPORT OUR WORK!!!
ABOUT US
HELO Media creates social spaces where survivors of war and disaster, humanitarian aid workers, rights advocates, crisis journalists, musicians, artists, and global thinkers can meet to produce media, share stories, and develop relationships which help people survive crisis. HELO, pronounced “heal-o,” is the slang term for helicopters in war zones.
Founded in 2009 by humanitarian journalist and aid worker Daniel J Gerstle, we have a social network spanning over thirty countries. We have produced media and events in Afghanistan, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and the US.
Our work has been covered by The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Rolling Stone, WNYC Soundcheck, Stuff Expat Aid Workers Like, Reuters, the BBC, and other media. Our current projects include:
- HELO Magazine | Online literary journalism, photo essays, videos, and culture about how people survive crisis;
- HELO Productions | Creative humanitarian media produced for audiences or clients;
- The Frontline Music Alliance | A network of musicians and cultural leaders working to directly support people who risk their lives for music in tough corners of the world; and…
- The Humanitarian Bazaar | A one-stop shop where the humanitarian and human rights community can go to prepare materially and socially for life on the edge.
Since we’ve been on the road in Afghanistan, South Sudan, Somalia, and Kenya, our web presence is growing and still under construction. For now, enjoy our media stream at HELO Magazine, HELO Magazine on Facebook, HELO Media on Facebook, and the Humanitarian Bazaar on Facebook.
If you would like to contract us to produce creative humanitarian media - video, photo, guidebooks, travel briefs, training modules, or sharp literary journalism, or have other questions, contact us at HELObazaar@gmail.com.
